Chapter Sixteen

I retraced my steps to the town square and turned to head to The Little Copper Cafe. The door was almost blown out of my hands by a gust of wind as I tried to enter. I stood there for a moment smoothing my dark red hair back down into place. The one day I didn’t put it up in a ponytail and it was flying all over the place. It was late and the cafe was almost empty. I took a seat and Claudette headed over with a full coffee cup.

“This will warm you up. And thanks for coming.”

“Ha! Are you kidding? I’m always up for sampling some of your baking.”

“Can I get you some lunch?”

“Ah, well I don’t want to spoil my appetite.”

She took a half step back and put her hands on her rounded hips, “No offense, but I’ve seen you eat. How about a bowl of tomato soup?”

“That would be perfect,” I laughed, “and I know you’re not making fun of my appetite.”

“I would never!” She feigned shock, laughing as she walked off.

She was a sweet lady and I was so glad she was a part of my life.

I sipped my coffee and a couple of minutes later Claudette was back with my bowl of tomato soup, a curl of steam rising from the surface. “I brought you a half of a grilled cheese too. Just a half so you won’t get too full.”

I rubbed my hands together and started in. “This looks so yummy. Thanks, Claudette.”

“You didn’t have breakfast, did you?”

“No, but how did you know?”

“Because you seemed pretty excited and it’s a grilled cheese for crying out loud. Most folks don’t get that excited about grilled cheese.”

“Well I’m not most people, it’s cold out and I’m hungry”

“Well, eat up. I’ll check on you later.” She walked off to check on the last few customers who remained in the cafe.

I was just finishing up when I heard her turn the key in the door. She went off to the kitchen and I walked behind the counter and poured her a cup of coffee. We settled back down at the table with four slices of cake in front of us.

“Okay, I have two for you to try today. This is my strawberry lemonade. It’s a marbled cake with both strawberry and lemon flavors.”

I took a bite of the cake, “I love this.” I took a second bite, “and I love this custard filling. You have a winner here.”

“Okay, here, now try the other,” she slid another slice of cake in front of me. “This one is a lemon blueberry.”

“I think you have a thing for lemon.”

“You’re right. I guess I hadn’t even thought about that. I suppose I should narrow it down to just one lemon flavor.”

“I never said that.” I took a bite and savored the flavor combinations. “This one is really good too.” It was an all lemon cake with a generous layer of blueberry compote between the layers and a cream cheese frosting.
